Elastin Peptides: Can Elastin Be Put Back? The Trials, the Labels and a Word With Two Meanings

Skin elastin is barely replaced in adult life. Oral 'elastin peptide' supplements rest on two company-linked human studies; no topical elastin trial turned up. What labels declare, what the trials measured, and why half the elastin-peptide literature is about something else.

Searches for "elastin peptide" have risen more than twenty-fold in a year (keyword data, October 2026), driven by marine elastin supplements sold for firmness and bounce. The underlying question is a fair one: elastin is the protein that lets skin spring back, and it is lost with age and sun. This page asks whether eating or applying elastin fragments can put any of it back, reading the trial record, the supplement labels and the turnover research as of 27 October 2026. It is not advice about taking a supplement. The wider version of the question, whole proteins against small peptides, is on peptides vs collagen.

What elastin is, and why adult skin barely replaces it

Elastin makes up the elastic fibres of the dermis: long, heavily cross-linked chains that stretch and recoil. Unlike collagen, most of it is laid down early in life. Two kinds of measurement show how little is replaced afterwards:

  • Radiocarbon. Atmospheric nuclear-weapons tests in the 1950s and 1960s left a carbon signature in proteins made at the time. Measuring it in elastin from normal adult lung, a 1991 study (Shapiro et al., Journal of Clinical Investigation) calculated a mean carbon residence time of 74 years (95% confidence limits 40 to 174): the elastin was about as old as the person.
  • Aspartic-acid racemization. Some amino acids slowly flip into their mirror form with time, and a protein that is never replaced accumulates the flipped form. In purified skin elastin a 2003 study (Ritz-Timme et al., British Journal of Dermatology) found the flipped form rising steadily with age (r = 0.98), and concluded that elastin shows "a lack of turnover and an accumulation of elastin damage" across ageing tissues.

That is the starting problem for any elastin product. It is not enough to supply building blocks; the body would have to assemble new elastic fibres, which adult skin does poorly.

The census: what the "elastin peptide" literature is

We searched PubMed on 27 October 2026 and read the titles.

Search Records
Elastin peptide, elastin-derived peptide, elastin hydrolysate or hydrolysed elastin 499
The same + skin, tagged randomized or clinical trial 5
The same, tagged retracted 0
Elastin-derived peptides, elastokines or VGVAPG (the fragment sequence) 293
Control: collagen peptides + skin, tagged randomized controlled trial 33

Of the five tagged trials, two are about elastin supplements and skin. The other three are burn-surgery studies of MatriDerm, a collagen-elastin sheet used under skin grafts, which the search caught because it contains elastin.

The word with two meanings. In medical research "elastin-derived peptides" usually means something quite different from a supplement: the fragments released when the body's own elastin breaks down, called elastokines. They are studied as signals of damage and inflammation in blood vessels, lungs and the brain, and the 293-record search is dominated by that work. A shopper reading that "elastin peptides affect cells" should know that much of that literature describes fragments associated with ageing tissue, not a beauty ingredient. Every count on this page was read by title for that reason.

The two human studies

  • Seong et al., 2024 (Skin Research and Technology, PMC10938029). Randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled; 100 healthy Korean adults; a product containing 100 mg of bonito elastin peptide (sold as VGPG Elastin) or placebo daily for 12 weeks. At 12 weeks the elastin group had lower skin roughness, shallower and smaller wrinkles around the eyes, higher hydration and a lower melanin index than placebo, with no product-related adverse events. Authors are from Yonsei University's dermatology department, a Seoul research centre and the R&D division of Daehan Chemtech; the paper declares no conflict of interest.
  • Shiratsuchi, Nakaba and Yamada, 2016 (Journal of the Science of Food and Agriculture). Mostly a cell study, plus an ingestion test of fish elastin hydrolysate. Skin elasticity rose 4% with the hydrolysate against 2% with placebo, with fewer wrinkles and better blood flow reported. All three authors work for Hayashikane Sangyo, a Shimonoseki company; the abstract does not give the number of participants.

What neither study did: measure elastin in the skin (by biopsy or imaging), run longer than three months, or test anyone outside one country. Neither has been repeated by an unconnected team. A wrinkle-depth reading from an instrument is a real measurement, but it is not evidence that elastic fibres were rebuilt.

No topical elastin trial appears among the five, and none turned up in the wider search.

What the labels declare

Supplements are not approved before sale, but their labels are filed in the NIH's Dietary Supplement Label Database. Searching it for "elastin" on 27 October 2026 returned 164 labels; we read the first 100. Most matched only because "elastin" appears in a claim. The ones that matter:

Product Declared elastin ingredient Amount per serving What the label shows
Body Kitchen Pro Elastin 1000 mg Prolastin (marine elastin peptides) 1,000 mg per 2 capsules Ten times the dose in the bonito trial, of a different branded ingredient
Body Kitchen Total Beauty Prolastin 100 mg per 3 capsules Alongside a 1,000 mg collagen blend
ResVitale Beauty 3 Collagen, Keratin & Elastin None — Collagen, hyaluronic acid, keratin (Cynatine HNS), vitamins; "elastin" in the name only
Reserveage Tres Beauty 3 None — Same formula; label says "support for collagen, keratin & elastin"
Natrol Collagen Skin Renewal None — 2,500 mg Verisol collagen peptides; the label claims "increases elastin by 18%"
Country Life Maxi-Skin Collagen + C&A None — 2,500 mg Verisol collagen peptides; elastin mentioned in the description

Two findings follow. "Elastin" on a front label often means no elastin inside: it names the effect a collagen product claims, not an ingredient. And where elastin is declared, the ingredient and the amount differ from the one trial with a placebo, so that trial's result cannot simply be carried over. Elastin products made from bonito or skipjack are fish-derived, which matters for anyone with a fish allergy.

Elastin in creams

"Hydrolysed elastin" and "soluble elastin" appear on cosmetic ingredient lists, where they sit on the skin's surface. The fibres they are named after are assembled inside the dermis from a precursor protein and cross-linked in place; a fragment spread on the surface cannot be built into them. Claims for elastin creams therefore rest on moisturisation and, in laboratory work, on effects on cells in a dish. The firmness questions asked of creams are covered on peptides for loose skin and peptides for skin tightening.

What can fairly be said

Adult skin replaces little or no elastin, according to both radiocarbon and amino-acid ageing studies. Oral elastin peptide rests on two human studies, both linked to companies that make elastin ingredients, one with a proper placebo arm and 100 people for 12 weeks; neither measured elastin in the skin. No topical elastin trial was found. Several products sold with "elastin" in their name declare none. For the collagen question, which has a much larger trial record, MuscleLedger's collagen pages count the supplement trials; on this site, what peptides do for skin sets out what the small cosmetic peptides have and have not shown. Anyone with a medical condition, or pregnant or breastfeeding, should take supplement questions to a doctor or pharmacist.

Frequently asked questions

Do elastin peptides work?

The human record is two oral studies. A 2024 Korean trial of 100 adults found a 100 mg daily bonito elastin peptide improved several instrument measures of wrinkles, hydration and pigmentation against placebo over 12 weeks, and a 2016 Japanese company study reported elasticity up 4% against 2%. Both are linked to companies in the elastin business, neither has been repeated by an unconnected group, and none measured whether skin elastin itself increased.

Which peptides increase elastin?

No peptide has been shown to rebuild elastic fibres in living human skin. Laboratory studies report that fish elastin hydrolysate and the dipeptide prolyl-glycine stimulate elastin production by skin cells in a dish, and that copper ions raise elastin expression in skin samples kept alive outside the body. A dish or an explant is not a face, and turnover studies suggest adult skin replaces very little elastin at all.

How long does it take for elastin peptides to work?

The trials measured at 4, 8 and 12 weeks. In the 2024 bonito elastin trial the reported differences from placebo were at 12 weeks; no human study ran longer, so nothing is known about what happens after three months or after stopping.

What is the difference between elastin peptides and collagen peptides?

They come from different proteins. Collagen gives skin strength and is replaced slowly through life; elastin gives it recoil and is laid down mostly before adulthood and then barely replaced. Collagen peptides have a far larger record: 33 PubMed records tagged as randomized controlled trials joining collagen peptides with skin on 27 October 2026, against 2 human studies for oral elastin.

Can an elastin cream restore elastin?

No trial found for this page tested one. Hydrolysed elastin is a cosmetic ingredient that sits on the skin's surface; elastin fibres themselves are huge cross-linked structures assembled inside the dermis, which a molecule applied to the surface cannot rebuild. Our page on peptides versus collagen sets out the size problem for whole proteins.

Are elastin peptide supplements safe?

The two human studies reported no product-related adverse events, but they were small and short. Most products are made from fish (bonito, skipjack) or other animal tissue, which matters for anyone with a fish allergy, and supplements are not approved by FDA before sale. Pregnancy, breastfeeding and medical conditions are questions for a doctor or pharmacist.
