The night cream is a fixture of almost every skincare range and one of the least examined objects in the category. This page asks the format's own question: has anyone tested whether applying a peptide at night does something that applying it in the morning does not?
The literature is small enough to read end to end, so we did.
Twenty-two papers, five trials
On 2026-09-20, PubMed returned 22 records with "night cream" in the title or abstract. Five are typed as randomized controlled trials:

Read the right-hand column and the pattern is the finding. In every one of the five, the night cream is a component of a regimen. The comparison is regimen against regimen, or regimen against nothing. Not one of them holds the formula constant and varies only the time of day — which is the only design that could show a night cream doing something a day cream could not.
The 2020 Oriflame study makes the point most clearly: an advanced routine of cleanser, toner, eye cream, serum and day and night cream beat a simple routine of cleanser and day cream on hydration, roughness, pore area and crow's feet depth. That is five products against two. It says nothing about the night.
The one trial with peptides in it applied them twice a day
Only one of the five contains peptides at all: Kaczvinsky and colleagues, Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology 2009, from Procter & Gamble with Christopher Griffiths as a co-author. Two double-blind, randomized, controlled, split-face studies — 42 women in the first, 35 in the second, aged 30 to 70 with moderate to distinct periorbital wrinkles. The test products contained niacinamide, the peptides Pal-KT and Pal-KTTKS, and carnosine, and comprised a daytime SPF 30 lotion, a night cream, an eye cream and a wrinkle treatment.
The night cream performed. In Study 1 it significantly improved crow's feet smoothness against no treatment at four weeks, and it was one of two products that also improved average maximum roughness. In Study 2 it improved both roughness measures. Pooled, all three products beat no treatment.
Then the methods sentence, quoted exactly as the abstract gives it:
Subjects applied 0.5 g of individual products to half their face twice daily for 4 weeks.
Twice daily. The product sold and tested as a night cream was applied in the morning as well. It is a legitimate design — the study was testing formulations against untreated skin, not testing the night — but it means the best-evidenced peptide night cream in the indexed literature has never been evaluated as a night cream. It was evaluated as a cream.
We are reading a single abstract sentence about study design, and we have quoted it rather than paraphrased it so anyone can check the reading.
The biology underneath the format is real
It would be easy to end there, and it would be unfair. The reason night creams exist is a genuine observation: skin is not the same organ at 3 a.m. as at 3 p.m., and this has been measured.
On 2026-09-20 PubMed held 22 records joining transepidermal water loss to circadian or diurnal variation. Among them: a 2024 pilot study of circadian rhythms in skin barrier function in atopic dermatitis in the Journal of Biological Rhythms, a 2024 Skin Pharmacology and Physiology paper on intraday variation in skin water parameters, and a 2024 Biology study of circadian rhythms in skin surface lipids in healthy women. Skin carries a peripheral circadian clock; barrier permeability, surface lipids and hydration all move on a daily cycle.
There is even a 2026 multicentre investigation built explicitly on the idea — Temporally Optimized Antioxidant Serums for Daytime Defense and Nighttime Repair, in Dermatology and Therapy. It tested antioxidant serums, not a peptide night cream, and it is the closest thing in this literature to a study designed around the clock rather than around a product line.
So the chronobiology is sound. The untested step is the one between it and the jar: that a peptide applied at 10 p.m. produces a different outcome from the same peptide applied at 8 a.m. Nobody has run it.
The category is not a category
There is no regulatory definition of a night cream. Nothing in US or EU cosmetic labelling rules says what a product must contain, or leave out, to be called one — the same gap our peptide serum page documents for the word serum. In practice the label usually signals a richer texture, no sunscreen, and sometimes an active a brand prefers to keep out of daylight.
Those last two are worth separating. Retinoids and some vitamin C derivatives have real photostability and tolerability reasons for evening use. We found no trial establishing that the peptides commonly sold in these creams lose anything in daylight, and brands do not generally claim it either — the night positioning is usually about texture and routine order.
What a reader can take from this
- The ingredients in a peptide night cream are the ingredients in a peptide cream; the evidence for them is the evidence on our ingredient pages, not something extra the format adds.
- The one randomized trial of a peptide night cream applied it morning and night, and reported a real improvement against untreated skin.
- Skin's daily rhythm is measured and genuine, and no study has connected it to a peptide product.
- A thicker cream at night is a comfort and routine decision, and there is nothing wrong with making it on those grounds.
