How to Read a Peptide Ingredient List: The Name Is Not the Molecule

An ingredient list names identities, not amounts — and the identities are unstable. One molecule wears three INCI names, six trade names can map to two peptides, and one listed "peptide" is a 99,369-dalton protein.

An ingredient list is the one piece of a cosmetic product that is legally controlled, and it is routinely offered as the answer to the question of whether a peptide product is what it claims. Our page on what a peptide serum actually is took the concentration half of that question and found that the label cannot answer it: below the 1 percent line, where every cosmetic peptide sits, the order of the list is legally arbitrary.

This page takes the other half — identity. Not how much is in the bottle, but which molecule is in it. That question the list can answer, and it is still harder than it looks, because the names are unstable in three separate ways.

First: the names in the advertising are not permitted on the label

21 CFR 701.3(c) requires each ingredient to be declared by the name established or adopted under the section's naming hierarchy. A supplier's trade name for a blend is not such a name, so it cannot appear in the declaration. The consequence is that the marketing and the list are written in two different vocabularies about the same bottle.

The Ordinary's Multi-Peptide Serum for Hair Density is a clean example, because the brand publishes both. Its marketing names six technologies: REDENSYL, AnaGain, Procapil, CAPIXYL, BAICAPIL and high-solubility caffeine. Its declaration names thirty-six ingredients and none of those words.

Every component is individually declared, so the mapping is checkable against the label itself. What the mapping shows is that six named technologies resolve to two peptides — biotinoyl tripeptide-1 and acetyl tetrapeptide-3 — with the rest being plant extracts, a stimulant and two amino acids. That is not a hidden fact; it is simply one the package does not perform for you.

Second: one molecule wears several names

This is the failure that catches careful readers, because it survives a careful reading.

Palmitoyl oligopeptide and palmitoyl tripeptide-1 are the same substance. PubChem resolves both to CID 10231864 — C30H54N6O5, 578.8 g/mol, CAS 147732-56-7 — and its synonym list carries "Palmitoyl Tripeptide-1 [INCI]" directly beside "Palmitoyl Oligopeptide (Retired)". One is the current designation and one is the superseded one. A shopper comparing two products, one listing each name, is comparing the same molecule.

The same pattern runs through the cosmetic peptides with the largest marketing behind them. Acetyl hexapeptide-3 and acetyl hexapeptide-8 are the older and current names for the molecule sold as Argireline. Copper tripeptide-1 is the INCI name for the tripeptide sold and researched as GHK-Cu; our copper peptides guide is written about the second name, and the labels are written in the first.

The check that resolves this costs one search. Put the INCI name into PubChem, read the synonym list, and note the CAS number. Two names sharing a CAS number are one ingredient.

Third: "peptide" on a label covers things that are not peptides in any ordinary sense

Chemistry uses peptide for short amino-acid chains and protein for long ones, with the conventional boundary near fifty residues. INCI naming is a register of ingredient identities rather than a chemical classification, and the register is wider than the word. A protein hydrolysate stretches the word in the other direction: a barrier cream sold on its peptide lists hydrolyzed rice protein, a mixture of fragments with no single structure or weight at all.

sh-Polypeptide-121 is the clearest case. It appears in ingredient lists among cosmetic peptides, and its supplier, Geltor, describes it plainly as biodesigned vegan human type 21 collagen, made by fermentation and sold as HumaColl21. It is a collagen. The reviewed human entry for the chain it copies — UniProt Q96P44, collagen alpha-1(XXI) — is 957 amino acids and 99,369 daltons.

Set that against the number this whole category argues about. The 500-dalton rule that our skin-peptide evidence page works through holds that compounds much above 500 Da do not passively cross intact stratum corneum in useful amounts. Most cosmetic peptides fail it by a factor of one or two. This one is about 199 times the threshold, and appears in the same list, styled the same way, as molecules a hundredth of its size.

All weights read 2026-09-16. Two entries clear 500 daltons; one exceeds it by two orders of magnitude.

What the numbers in the names do and do not mean

The word part of an INCI peptide name encodes chain length: a tripeptide has three amino-acid residues, a tetrapeptide four, a hexapeptide six. That part is informative.

The number after the hyphen is a registry index. It distinguishes different molecules that share a chain length, and it is not a strength, a dose, a generation or a ranking. Copper tripeptide-1 and palmitoyl tripeptide-1 both carry a 1 and are different substances. Oligopeptide-68 is not sixty-eight of anything; at 1,410.5 g/mol it is simply the sixty-eighth entry in its class. Reading the trailing number as a potency figure is the most common misreading of these names, and nothing on a package corrects it.

So what is an ingredient list actually good for?

Two things, and it is worth being exact about both.

It establishes identity, once you have run the synonym check. You can learn which molecule is present, look up its weight, and count what has been published about it. That is the entire method behind this site's ingredient entries, and it is reproducible with free tools: INCI name → PubChem (formula, weight, synonyms, CAS) → UniProt if the record turns out to be a protein → PubMed for the count of what exists.

It establishes an upper bound, and only that. A peptide's presence below the 1 percent line is a ceiling, not a measurement. Whether it is at 0.9 percent or 0.0005 percent is undisclosed, and the order does not encode it. That is the concentration half, and it is worked through with the regulation quoted on our peptide serum page.

What it cannot do is tell you whether the product works. Nothing on a label does. The literature behind each molecule is a separate question with a separate answer, and on some of these names — sh-Polypeptide-121 under its INCI designation, biotinoyl tripeptide-1 under its — the answer is that there is no published literature to read at all. The sharpest live example of that is acetyl tetrapeptide-5, the de-puffing peptide in COSRX's hydrogel eye patch: a registered molecule with a PubChem entry, a supplier and zero indexed papers under any of its names.

Frequently asked questions

Can I tell how much peptide is in a product from the ingredient list?

No, and that is a separate question from the one this page answers. US rules require descending order of predominance, but 21 CFR 701.3(f)(2) permits everything present at 1 percent or less to be listed in any order at all, and cosmetic peptides sit at or below that line. The arithmetic of that is set out in full on our page on what a peptide serum is. What an ingredient list does establish reliably is identity — which molecule is in the bottle — and even that takes work, because the same molecule is listed under different names on different products.

Why do the ingredients on the box not match the ingredients in the advertising?

Because the advertising uses supplier trade names and the declaration is not permitted to. Under 21 CFR 701.3(c) an ingredient is declared by its established name, so a branded complex appears on the label only as its component parts, scattered through the list in order of predominance. On one hair serum, five trade names resolve to a caffeine, two peptides and a series of plant extracts, all of which are individually listed. The mapping is checkable, but nothing on the package performs it for you.

Is everything called a peptide on an ingredient list actually a peptide?

Not in the sense most readers mean. Chemistry generally reserves peptide for short amino-acid chains and calls longer ones proteins, with the conventional dividing line at roughly fifty residues. INCI naming is a registry, not a chemistry textbook: sh-Polypeptide-121 is a biotechnological human collagen, and the reviewed human sequence for the chain it copies runs to 957 amino acids and 99,369 daltons. It appears in a list alongside molecules under 900 daltons, with nothing on the label to indicate the difference.

Does a higher number in a peptide name mean a stronger ingredient?

No. The word part of the name encodes chain length — a tripeptide has three amino-acid residues, a hexapeptide six — while the number after the hyphen is a registry index distinguishing different molecules of the same length. What is a peptide listed below the preservatives doing there?

It is present at 1 percent or less, which is where cosmetic peptides are used anyway, so position below a preservative is weak evidence on its own. Preservatives are themselves used at fractions of a percent, so a list is not sorted into an actives section and a filler section. Below the 1 percent line the order is not required to mean anything at all, which is why identity — is this molecule one with a literature behind it — carries more information than placement.

How can I check a peptide on a label myself?

Three free steps, each reproducible. Search the INCI name in PubChem to get the compound record, its molecular formula and weight, and its synonym list, which is where duplicate names surface. If the record describes a protein rather than a small molecule, check UniProt for the chain it copies. Then search the same INCI name in PubMed and count the records. Doing that on a handful of common cosmetic peptides is how we found that two names describe one molecule and that some names return no research literature at all.

Does the same molecule ever appear twice on one label?

It can, under two names, which is the strongest reason to run the synonym check. Palmitoyl oligopeptide and palmitoyl tripeptide-1 are one compound, PubChem CID 10231864, and the register itself marks the first name retired. Acetyl hexapeptide-3 and acetyl hexapeptide-8 refer to the same widely sold molecule under an older and a current designation. A list showing both names of a pair is naming one ingredient twice, not two ingredients.
