Palmitoyl tetrapeptide-7 appears on thousands of ingredient lists, almost always beside palmitoyl tripeptide-1, because the two are sold together as the blend known as Matrixyl 3000. Search the peer-reviewed literature for the peptide by name and five records come back, thirty-four if the search is widened to every field and to its trade name, Rigin.
More importantly: in every human study among them, it is one ingredient in a mixture. There does not appear to be a published trial of palmitoyl tetrapeptide-7 on its own.
What it is
It is a four-amino-acid peptide with a palmitic acid tail attached. The tail is the practical part — a bare peptide of this size is water-loving and does not cross the stratum corneum easily, and the fatty chain makes the molecule lipophilic enough to have a chance of getting past the surface. The same trick gives the whole family its names: palmitoyl tripeptide-1, palmitoyl tetrapeptide-10, palmitoyl pentapeptide-4.
Its supplier positioning is anti-inflammatory rather than collagen-signalling. The argument is that ageing skin carries a low-grade excess of interleukin signalling that degrades the extracellular matrix over time, and that damping it protects the matrix indirectly — as opposed to palmitoyl tripeptide-1, which is presented as a direct instruction to build. That division of labour is the reason the two are blended, and it is a supplier's account rather than a finding from an independent trial.
The five papers
Int J Cosmet Sci, September 2026 — the most substantial and the most recent. Researchers at L'Oréal's China Research and Innovation Center with MetaNovas Biotech built a knowledge graph of genes involved in type III collagen regulation from the literature, screened peptides listed in China's cosmetic ingredient inventory by molecular docking against those targets, then tested the shortlist experimentally. Four peptides — palmitoyl tetrapeptide-7, acetyl hexapeptide-8, palmitoyl tripeptide-1 and palmitoyl tetrapeptide-10 — significantly increased type III collagen in human dermal fibroblasts after UV exposure, without detectable cytotoxicity, and the combination did more than the individual components. In ex vivo skin tissue the combination also raised type I, III and IV collagen.
This is a real result and worth stating precisely: cells in a dish, and skin outside a body. Nothing was measured on a face.
Skin Res Technol, 2024 — an eye cream from Mageline Biology Tech containing a four-part active complex: yeast/rice fermentation filtrate, N-acetylneuraminic acid, palmitoyl tripeptide-1 and palmitoyl tetrapeptide-7. Efficacy and safety were evaluated with dermatology co-authors. A four-active formula cannot tell anyone what one of the four did, and this is the same manufacturer study that appears in the evidence base for its blend partner. Pharmaceuticals (Basel), 2021 — a review of seven synthetic peptides used in sensitive-skin cosmetics, palmitoyl tetrapeptide-7 among them. Its conclusion is the most useful sentence anyone has published about this category: only five of the seven had evidence supporting their use, only one clinical study included volunteers who actually had sensitive skin, and the available data is, in the authors' description, mostly found in patents and supplier documents. That is a peer-reviewed review saying out loud what an ingredient-list reader can only suspect.
J Cosmet Dermatol, 2015 — a mass-spectrometry imaging study of the dermal-epidermal junction with age, in which the anti-ageing evaluation used a blend of palmitoyl oligopeptide and palmitoyl tetrapeptide-7. Again a mixture, and again nothing attributable to one component.
Int J Biol Macromol, 2025 — an injectable polypeptide/chitosan hydrogel for diabetic wound healing, which is a different field entirely and shares only vocabulary.

The pattern here is the one that runs through the whole cosmetic peptide field, and which our Matrixyl and Argireline pages document for the other members of the family: strong, plausible, replicated laboratory work, and a thin layer of human evidence that almost always tests a finished formula rather than a molecule.
The concentration problem, restated
Even a reader who accepts the laboratory data cannot use it, because the number that would connect it to a product is absent. Peptides of this class are used at fractions of a percent, and United States cosmetic labelling rules allow everything at or below one percent to be listed in any order — so the peptide's position in an ingredient list carries no information about how much is there. Supplier blends compound the difficulty: a product may declare Matrixyl 3000 without stating what proportion of the formula it is, and the blend itself is mostly solvent.
The practical consequence is that two products naming the same peptide can differ by an order of magnitude in how much they contain, with no way to tell them apart from the carton. We set out the arithmetic in full on what a peptide serum is.
One digit apart
Three ingredients in this family are separated on a label by a single character, and they are not interchangeable:
- Palmitoyl tetrapeptide-7 — this molecule, positioned as anti-inflammatory, blended with palmitoyl tripeptide-1.
- Palmitoyl tetrapeptide-10 — a different peptide, which appeared alongside it in the 2026 screening study.
- Palmitoyl tetrapeptide-20 — an α-MSH agonist with a small clinical study in hair pigmentation and nothing to do with facial ageing, covered on peptides for gray hair.
A claim attached to one of these numbers does not transfer to the others, and marketing copy is not always careful about which one it is quoting.
