Peptide shampoo is a category built on an inference: peptides are studied for skin, hair grows out of skin, therefore a peptide in a shampoo should help hair. On 2026-09-08 we searched PubMed for every paper joining peptides with shampoo and read all of them. There are nine. Not one is about growing hair. Two are about copper damaging it. One is about dogs.

The same search restricted to randomized controlled trials returns zero. For scale, in the same database on the same day: shampoos of other compositions have 14 randomized trials in alopecia or hair loss, and minoxidil has 139.
This is a different kind of emptiness from the one this publication usually reports. It is not that the question is hard to study or that regulators have made trials impossible. Shampoos get randomized trials routinely — ketoconazole alone has 49 papers pairing it with shampoo and hair. The peptide version has simply never been tested.
What peptides in shampoo are genuinely for
Read as a group, the nine papers describe a real and much smaller function: peptides and hydrolysed proteins deposit on the hair fibre. The 1985 study measured exactly that, using labelled collagen hydrolysates under application conditions designed to simulate real use. The 2013 feather-keratin work reports an effect on the fibre. The 2017 fragrance paper uses peptide binding as the mechanism to make something else stick to hair.
Depositing on a fibre can make hair feel and look better. It is a legitimate cosmetic effect and it is why hydrolysed proteins have been in conditioners for decades. It is also, precisely, not hair growth: it acts on the hair that has already left the follicle.
The rinse-off problem, stated plainly
Every peptide result that concerns the living scalp rather than the dead fibre comes from a route that maximises contact. The records reporting human hair outcomes for peptide formulations involve intradermal injection of a growth-factor formulation (Uebel et al., J Cosmet Laser Ther 2018) or fractional non-ablative laser-assisted delivery (J Cosmet Laser Ther 2018) — both of which deliberately breach the barrier because the compound will not cross it otherwise.
A shampoo does the opposite. It is applied, worked in and rinsed off. None of the nine records measures how much peptide remains on the scalp after rinsing, which means the category's central physical question has no published answer. Our peptides for skin page sets out why that question is hard even for a leave-on product: most cosmetic peptides sit well above the roughly 500-dalton threshold for passive movement through intact stratum corneum, and the one direct measurement we could open found 0.22% of a 10% dose of acetyl hexapeptide-8 in the stratum corneum after 24 hours of contact. A minute in the shower is not 24 hours.
The copper papers point the other way
Two of the nine are about copper accelerating photochemical damage to hair fibres under ultraviolet light — a 2014 paper on copper's role in that damage and a 2015 paper building an advanced damage model with copper present.
That deserves stating carefully, because it would be easy to overclaim. Copper reaching hair from tap water or the environment as a free ion is not the same chemical entity as copper held inside a tripeptide, and the whole point of a copper peptide is that the metal is chelated. The 2014 and 2015 papers are not evidence that copper peptide shampoo damages hair. They are evidence that the same element appears in this literature in the role of damage agent at least as often as in the role of repair agent — and a shopper reading a copper-peptide haircare label is unlikely to have been told that.
What the copper-peptide clinical record actually is
Searching copper tripeptide or GHK-Cu together with hair, alopecia or follicles returns 8 records and zero randomized controlled trials. The clinical study most often pointed to is worth reading closely, because its numbers travel much further than its design supports.
It was open-label, interventional, single-centre and uncontrolled, in adults with mild to moderate dandruff, running 15 days. The regimen was two products: a hydroxy-acid scrub and a serum containing copper tripeptide-1 together with witch hazel, hesperidin, hyaluronic acid and pea protein. Reported outcomes included adherent scalp flaking improved 61.24%, scalp hydration 76.24%, hair density 12.48% and hair thickness 25.36%, all at p<0.0001 (Patel et al., Cureus 2024). One author is employed by Anveya Living, which the paper's own disclosure names as the manufacturer of the test products.
Four things follow. There was no control group, so nothing separates the regimen from time, washing and attention. Two products were used together, so nothing is attributable to the copper tripeptide. The serum held five actives, so nothing is attributable to it even within the serum. And 15 days is shorter than the interval over which hair density can meaningfully change — the hair cycle does not move that fast, which makes a 12.48% density gain in a fortnight a measurement about how hair was sitting and reflecting light, not about how much of it there is.
That is not a criticism of the authors, who described their design accurately and disclosed the affiliation. It is a caution about how the number is used afterwards.
What a peptide shampoo can honestly claim
It can claim to clean hair. It can claim that hydrolysed peptides deposit on the fibre and can improve its feel and appearance, which has been measured since 1985. It can claim to be well tolerated.
It cannot claim to grow hair, thicken hair or treat hair loss, because no study of a peptide shampoo has measured any of those things. And it cannot borrow the copper-peptide skin literature, because that literature is about leave-on application to facial skin and the transfer has never been tested.
What would settle it
A randomized, vehicle-controlled trial of one peptide shampoo at a stated concentration, against the same shampoo base without it, with hair counts by standardised phototrichogram over at least six months — the design the minoxidil literature has used 139 times. Nothing remotely like it exists.
