Peptide Hair Serum: Six Records, Five of Them About Something Else

PubMed holds six papers joining peptides with hair or scalp serum. Five are about peptides measured inside hair, not applied to it. The sixth is a 15-day uncontrolled study — and the one real trial of a peptide scalp lotion is somewhere else entirely.

A hair serum is the one peptide format with a delivery argument that holds together: it is left on the scalp, which is where a follicle is. That argument is worth taking seriously, and it is also almost the only thing this category has.

On 2026-09-13 we searched PubMed for every paper joining peptides with hair or scalp serums, then for every randomized trial of peptides in hair loss, and read the results record by record. What follows is the count, and then the correction to the count.

Six records, and what they are about

Five of the six use "peptide" in a sense that has nothing to do with cosmetics. C-peptide is a fragment the body sheds while making insulin; researchers have learned to find it inside hair shafts as a record of past blood sugar. That is a peptide in hair, not on it.

This matters beyond pedantry. A count of six, quoted without reading, would suggest a small but real literature. The real figure is one — and that one is a 15-day, open-label, uncontrolled study of two products used together, with an author employed by the manufacturer. The trial that is not in the search results

The one genuinely informative study sits outside both searches, because it tested a lotion rather than anything labelled a serum.

Iwabuchi and colleagues at Shiseido's Global Innovation Center ran a double-blind, randomized study of a penta-peptide, Gly-Pro-Ile-Gly-Ser, in 22 Japanese men with androgenetic alopecia over four months, published in the Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology in 2016. The results, all against placebo lotion:

Three things should be said about it plainly. It is the only randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial of a topical peptide in androgenetic alopecia that this search surfaced. It was run by the company that developed the ingredient, in 22 men, in one population. And its endpoints are about hair calibre — how thick the existing hairs are — with blinded photography as the appearance measure, not a hair count on a marked area of scalp.

It is also, for this page's purposes, the one piece of evidence pointing at the format rather than the molecule. The product was applied daily and left on the scalp for four months. Nothing in the peptide hair literature reports a positive result from a product that was rinsed off.

What is actually in the bottle

Marketed peptide hair serums rarely contain the peptide above. They contain trade-named complexes, and the published record under those names is very small:

The short version is that each complex's supporting paper tests the complex, not the peptide, and pairs it with a botanical extract — so a positive result cannot be assigned to the peptide even within the study that produced it.

Most finished serums then add caffeine, niacinamide, saw palmetto or biotin on top. A category whose best trial tested one peptide in a plain lotion is sold almost entirely as multi-active blends.

Those counts come from the same database on the same day, using the same publication-type filter. They do not say which treatment suits any particular person — hair loss has causes that need diagnosing, and that is a clinician's territory rather than a shopping decision. They say that one column has been measured repeatedly across decades and the other has barely been measured at all.

What a peptide hair serum can honestly claim

That it is leave-on, which is the delivery route every positive result in this area used. That specific named peptides have been studied in small trials, with results reported for hair thickness rather than hair count. That it has not been shown to regrow hair, because the trial testing that has not been run on any marketed formula.

What would settle it is unremarkable and has not been done: one named peptide at a disclosed concentration, in a vehicle-controlled trial of six to twelve months, with hair counts in a marked scalp area as the primary endpoint and a sample larger than 22.

Do peptide hair serums work?

One randomized, double-blind trial of a topical peptide lotion in male androgenetic alopecia reports a real result, and it is a modest one: over four months in 22 Japanese men, a penta-peptide increased the proportion of thick hairs and reduced the proportion of vellus hairs against placebo, with blinded photo grading also favouring the peptide. That is the strongest evidence this category has, and it was produced by the ingredient's manufacturer in a sample of 22. Marketed peptide hair serums generally do not contain that peptide, so the result does not transfer to them.

What does the research on peptide hair serums actually say?

Searched directly, almost nothing — and the reason is worth knowing. A PubMed search joining peptides with hair or scalp serum returns six records, and five of them use the word peptide in an unrelated sense: C-peptide measured inside scalp hair as a diabetes marker, hair cortisol studies, case reports, a prealbumin variant. Only one record concerns a product applied to the scalp, and it is a 15-day, open-label, uncontrolled study of a scrub-and-serum regimen. The literature on this product category is not thin; for the most part it is not there.

Is a peptide serum better than a peptide shampoo?

On delivery grounds a leave-on serum has the better case, and it is the only argument in the category with anything behind it. The one topical peptide trial reporting a positive result in androgenetic alopecia used a lotion left on the scalp daily for four months. A shampoo is rinsed away within a minute. Neither format has been compared against the other in a trial, so this is an argument from contact time rather than a measured difference.

How does a peptide hair serum compare to minoxidil?

The two are not comparable on evidence. Minoxidil has 139 randomized controlled trials in alopecia and hair loss indexed in PubMed; topical peptides, after removing records that use the word in an unrelated sense, have about five, one of which is in 22 men. This is not a statement about which suits a particular person — that is a clinician's question — but about how much is known. One has been measured many times over decades and the other has barely been measured.

What is in a peptide hair serum?

Usually a trade-named complex rather than a single peptide: Capixyl, which pairs acetyl tetrapeptide-3 with red clover extract, Procapil, built on biotinoyl tripeptide-1, or Redensyl. Copper tripeptide-1 appears in scalp products too. None of these has much of a published record under its own name — 2, 6 and 5 PubMed records respectively — and most finished serums combine one of them with caffeine, niacinamide, saw palmetto or biotin, which makes any observed result impossible to attribute to the peptide.

How long would a peptide hair serum need to be used?

The only trial that reports a result ran for four months, and it measured hair calibre rather than count. Hair-growth research generally works on longer clocks than skin research because a follicle's growth phase is measured in years, which is why trials of established treatments commonly run six to twelve months. A four-week judgement of a hair product is shorter than any published design in this area.

Why do the search results include diabetes and cancer studies?

Because the word peptide has two unrelated uses here. C-peptide is a fragment released when the body makes insulin, and researchers have measured it inside scalp hair as a record of past blood sugar; other records concern hormone peptides measured alongside hair cortisol. Those studies are about peptides found in hair, not peptides put on it. Counting them would inflate the apparent evidence base for a cosmetic product roughly sixfold.
