There is no published research on peptide toners. That sentence is easy to write and hard to trust, so here is the search, exactly as run, and what came back.
On 2026-09-15 we asked PubMed for records with peptide and toner in the title or abstract. Three records. No randomized trials. Reading the three is the article.

Two of the three records in the entire "peptide toner" literature are there because a scientist is called Toner-Webb.
This is worth more than a joke about search syntax. A database matches strings; a literature has subjects. We have now hit the same trap three times on this site in a fortnight — the stretch-mark search is mostly 1980s brain anatomy, where striae names a band of nerve fibres, and the rosacea search is mostly about a peptide the body makes rather than one anyone sells. A count is a starting point. Classifying what was counted is the work.
The format has been tested — just never with a peptide
It would be wrong to move from "no peptide toner studies" to "toners do nothing". Searching toner with skin returns 23 records for the whole category and every ingredient in it. Most test a toner as one step inside a multi-product regimen — a three-step acne system, a hydroquinone system — where the toner's own contribution cannot be separated from the products either side of it. Two of the 23 are about photocopier toner causing occupational skin and airway problems.
But two of them do something useful.
A randomized, placebo-controlled toner trial exists, and it is a model of how to run one. At Mae Fah Luang University in Thailand, a base toner was formulated and sensory-tested, guava extract was added at 3%, 4.5% and 6%, and the 6% version went into a split-face, randomized, single-blind study in 21 volunteers for 28 days, with sebum measured by tape on the forehead and nose.

The control is the thing to notice: not an untreated cheek, but the same toner without the active. That design answers the only question a shopper has — does the ingredient on the front of the bottle do anything beyond what the liquid carrying it already does. Swap guava extract for a named peptide at a disclosed concentration and the study writes itself. It has not been published.
And the format's hydration contribution has been quantified. A 2016 comparison set seven application patterns against untreated skin: cream only, toner only, cream and toner in each order, cream with repeated toner or spray water every two hours, toner repeated every two hours. Hydration was measured at 2, 4, 6 and 8 hours.
Every treated zone was significantly more hydrated than untreated skin. On normal skin, cream followed by repeated toner produced the largest change, and the three patterns that included cream clustered together with no significant difference between them. Toner alone came last of the seven. On dry skin, cream alone was as good as any combination.
So a toner hydrates, modestly, and it is at its best on top of a cream rather than instead of one. The application order barely mattered.
Why the format is a hard place to put a peptide
Our cleanser entry sets out the rinse-off problem: an active that goes down the sink. A toner is not that — it stays on. Its problems are different and less often stated.
Dose. A toner is water-thin and is usually the cheapest step in a range. Peptides are priced by the gram and are almost never disclosed as a percentage in cosmetics. A serum at an undisclosed concentration is already hard to judge; a toner at an undisclosed concentration in a more dilute base is harder.
Residence. The trials that produced the peptide results this site reports used leave-on serums and creams applied twice daily for 8 to 24 weeks, sitting on skin between applications. A toner is applied and then covered within a minute or two by whatever comes next. Whether that helps penetration or dilutes it has not been measured for any peptide.
Deposition. Nobody has measured how much peptide is left on skin after a toner, in either direction. That is an absence, not a low number, and it should be described as one.
None of this makes a peptide toner a bad product. It makes the peptide on its label a marketing variable rather than a measured one — the same conclusion the cleanser and body lotion formats reach by different routes, while the serum remains the format with the trials.
What would settle it
The 2019 guava study is the template, and it cost one formulation, 21 volunteers and four weeks. A named peptide, a stated percentage, the identical base toner on the other side of the face, twelve weeks, an instrumental endpoint. Until someone runs it, a peptide toner is a reasonable hydrating step with an unproven ingredient claim, and the honest version of its marketing would say exactly that.
