OLEHENRIKSEN Pout Preserve: Two Peptides That Look Like Matrixyl 3000 and Are Not

Palmitoyl hexapeptide-12 and palmitoyl tripeptide-1 sit at positions 10 and 11 of a waterless, 43-ingredient gloss base. The pair shares one peptide with Matrixyl 3000 and not the other, so that trade name's material does not carry over.

The brand renamed it. It is Pout Preserve Hydrating Peptide Lip Treatment on olehenriksen.com, $24.00, while a good many retailers still list the earlier Pout Preserve Peptide Lip Treatment. Same product line, and the newer name is the more accurate of the two — hydration is what the formula is built to do.

The list, in order

The Sweet Macaron declaration runs to 43 entries once fragrance components and colorants are counted. The first nine build the stick:

No water is declared anywhere in the list. This is an anhydrous formula, which is ordinary for a lip stick or gloss and unusual among the products this site analyses.

The pair that is not the pair

The two peptides sit next to each other, both begin with palmitoyl, and one of them is palmitoyl tripeptide-1. That is enough to read as the supplier blend most peptide skincare uses. It is not.

Matrixyl 3000 is palmitoyl tripeptide-1 plus palmitoyl tetrapeptide-7. Palmitoyl tetrapeptide-7 is not in this formula. What is here is palmitoyl tripeptide-1 plus palmitoyl hexapeptide-12, a different second peptide — so the product shares one member of the pair and not the other.

The consequence is the whole reason to check: whatever is claimed for Matrixyl 3000 as a blend is a claim about a combination this product does not contain. Our Matrixyl entry goes through what exists for that blend anyway, and the finding there was already thin — no isolated randomized wrinkle trial indexed, one manufacturer study of a multi-ingredient eye cream, and a supplier methodology paper the authors themselves called preliminary. A blend's evidence is weak; half a blend's evidence is not a category at all.

This is the second time in two nights that a peptide's supplier identity has failed to transfer between products. The other was biotinoyl tripeptide-1 in The Ordinary's lash serum, where the same molecule appears under a different trade name without the partner ingredients that the trade name's studies used.

What is published on each peptide

Palmitoyl tripeptide-1 — PubChem CID 10231864, 578.8 g/mol. Two records.

Both are well above the 500-dalton figure our peptides for skin census discusses, and the palmitoyl tail is there precisely because the bare peptide is too hydrophilic to associate with a lipid membrane. Four indexed records between two molecules is the file, and neither peptide has a record testing it on lips.

The lip literature is the thinner half of that. Our peptide lip treatment explainer found one randomized trial of a peptide lip product in the indexed record, and it never measured lip volume — the endpoint the entire category is bought for.

The claims, and what kind of statement each one is

OLEHENRIKSEN publishes results from a 4-week clinical study on 39 people and an 8-week clinical study on 39 people:

  • 95% agree it instantly rescues dry, flaky lips
  • 97% agree it enhances the look of lips
  • 90% agree it leaves lips looking and feeling plumper
  • 95% agree it rescues dry, flaky lips

Every one is an agreement percentage — participants answering a questionnaire. That is a legitimate and regulated form of consumer testing, and it measures opinion. None of the four reports a quantity: not a lip dimension, not a volume, not an instrument reading.

The headline sits on top of them: "clinically fuller-looking lips in just one week." The load-bearing word is looking. A fuller-looking lip is a perception claim, and the studies behind it collected perceptions, so the sentence is internally consistent — it simply is not the measurement a reader may take it for. Neither study, as published, states a control arm. Without one, an occlusive wax-and-polybutene base applied to dry lips would be expected to produce high agreement on dryness questions on its own.

What is in it besides peptides

The emollient package is the substance of the formula. Cloudberry seed oil at 7 and kokum butter at 8 are both listed above the peptides, along with açaí sterols; sunflower oil, caprylic/capric triglyceride and carnauba wax follow lower down. Linoleic, linolenic and oleic acids are declared individually.

Fragrance is declared in detail. Parfum/Fragrance appears with five named components — benzaldehyde, geranyl acetate, limonene, pinene and terpineol — alongside citrus peel oil, wax and fruit extract higher in the list. Naming them is an EU labelling requirement for known fragrance allergens and is more disclosure than many lip products give. It is a fact about the label rather than a finding about the product.

Colorants close the list, and they are shade-specific: iron oxides and titanium dioxide for Sweet Macaron. A reader checking a different shade is reading a partly different declaration.

The brand's own numbers establish that 39 people were asked questions twice and largely agreed. They do not establish a measured change in any lip, and they are not offered as one — the word looking is doing exactly the work it appears to be doing.

We have not worn it. A declaration read in order and a claim read closely are statements about what a company has published, never about what a product does.

Why does it matter that the formula has no water?

Because the base is doing work that is easy to attribute to the peptides. A waterless polybutene and wax stick is occlusive: it sits on the lip and slows water loss, which is the mechanism behind almost every immediate improvement in how dry lips look and feel. Occlusion is a real and useful effect. It is also the same effect a peptide-free balm of similar construction would produce, which is why a single-arm study of the finished product cannot separate the two.

Is the ingredient list the same for every shade?

No. The structural base and the two peptides are common, but the colorant portion differs by shade, and the analysis on this page reads the Sweet Macaron list. A reader checking a different shade should read that shade's own declaration, because the entries after the fragrance components change.
